The JUI-F's Frontier Naib Amir was born in Mansehra's Chakya village where the family owns agricultural land. For the last 40 years, however, the family has been living in Peshawar where Qari Fayaz ur Rahman administers his famous seminary, Darul Qurra al Markazia. In 1970-71, he graduated from Wifaqul Madaris, Multan. (Under University Grants Commission rules, a Wifaqul Madaris degree is equivalent to both MA Islamiat and MA Arabic.) He later spent a year at a religious university in Saudi Arabia, following which he completed a doctorate from Egypt's Jamia al Azhar in the early 80s. Qari Fayazur Rehman has been affiliated with the JUI-F since the mid eighties and twice served as the party's Frontier Naib Amir. His seminary has branches in Afghanistan and he was therefore a regular visitor to that country until 9/11. His students regularly traveled to Afghanistan to enlist in the Taleban's war effort and many an anti-US protests were planned at his mosque in Peshawar's Namak Mandi area after the Taleban's fall. He has also been involved in the timber business and bought large forest stocks in Swat and Kohistan in the 90s. He contested elections for the first time on October 10, 2002.
