The deputy general-secretary of the Mutahidda Majlis-e-Amal was born in Quetta, and is also a product of the system of religious seminaries. He was an active member of the JTI when he was a student and has occupied key offices of the JUI since. He was elected to the National Assembly the first time he contested elections in 1988, when he stood from the Quetta-Chaghai seat on a JUI ticket. Later he was also elected senator and served as parliamentary leader of the JUI in the Senate. Hafiz Hussain Ahmad was also at the forefront of the campaign launched by the JUI and other religious parties against the US attack on Afghanistan. In the October polls, he defeated PML(Q) candidate Baloch Khan Mengal, a close relative of the governor of Balochistan, and PPPP candidate Sardar Fateh Mohammad Hasni.
